What is
Resurgent Cycling Collective?

Welcome to Resurgent Cycling Collective.  Since you have found us, it is a good bet that you may need or already have had a joint replacement.  You may have even been told that you will need to change from running to, say, cycling or swimming.  That is one of the major reasons to why we are here.  The members of this group have suffered from joint deterioration to the point of replacement .  Now we ride.  And swim.  Mainly we ride.  We are here to help you with your questions.  We are also here for your motivation.  We are here to offer a shoulder to cry on or brag about your accomplishments.   And finally, we are here to give you a family of like people bound by the meme, Bionic is Beautiful.

Cycling Knee Problems.

SPORTS INJURIES

Introduction

Cycling is a great low-impact aerobic activity. Cyclists are usually more efficient on both hills and flat terrain when they pedal quickly (at about 80-85 rpm) rather than at slower cadences. Although cycling is considered a knee-sparing exercise because it does not require impact with the ground, the repetitive motion of pedalling can lead to a variety of overuse knee injuries. The majority of cycling injuries are indeed caused by overuse, which leads to cumulative tissue microtrauma and consequent symptoms. In overuse injuries the problem is often not acute tissue inflammation, but chronic degeneration

How does bicycling affect the longevity of Total Hip Arthroplasty? A finite element wear analysis

Abstract
As the number of young and active individuals undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) are increasing yearly, there is a need for hip prostheses to have increased longevity. Current investigations into the longevity of these prostheses only include walking as the patient's activity as there is limited data on the amount and intensity of other activity performed by the patient. To further understand the evolution of wear and increase the longevity of these implants, the impact of different activities on the hip prosthesis needs to be investigated. In this study, a finite element model and wear algorithm was developed to simulate both walking and

bicycling over a 5-year period. The XLPE acetabular cup volumetric wear rate was found to be 33 mm3/yr while the femoral head taper wear rates were between 0.01 – 0.39 mm3/yr. The results showed that by adding bicycling of up to 80 km per week with normal walking activity, the XLPE mean volumetric wear rate increased by 67% and the metallic mean volumetric wear rate by 11%. However, the patient may gain further health benefits from this additional activity. Assistive electric bikes may also be used to further reduce the loads on the hip joint, allowing for lower amounts of wear.

How I became Bionic The beginning of RCC

From Becoming Bionic

The Golden Rule of Athletics and Aging. Don’t stop because you may never get it back!

The spiral down, and the sheer determination to break that Golden Rule of Athletics and Aging.

The Discovery

Few could imagine how much pain I was in.  I was sure it was my lower spine causing the problem.  Many physicians had described the horrible condition my spine was in, but none could isolate the source of the pain.  Also, my spine is affected by scoliosis.  A number of disc injuries have been diagnosed as well.  Not to mention (but I will) impingements in my S1/L4 vertebrae.  The pain was relentless and impossible to ignore.  With a list like this (believe it or not, there is more too) I found it hard to do almost anything.   No medical professional I saw seemed capable of giving me a diagnosis of what was causing my limp, pain, and growing loss of overall movement.  It wasn’t until I saw a doctor a friend recommended (my eternal gratitude to you Diane) that I got a diagnosis of what was going on.  With a simple walk across her exam room, this doctor immediately recognized that my hips were the issue and my lower spine was only a contributor.  The doctor immediately requested X-Rays.  Those X-Rays revealed that my hips were best described by this doctor as,  “Some of the worst hips I have ever seen in my 14 years of being a doctor”.
